The Awesome Running Playlist – Track 7

Track 7 – Lose Yourself – Eminem (2002)

“Look, if you had one shot, or one opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted, in one moment
Would you capture it, or just let it slip?”

Not a bad opening, eh? How did this one fall to number 7? It’s really is a final mile tune when you need some real inspiration, so if this playlist ever gets a final definitive list, this will be towards the end.

For some reason I associate this song with the Rocky films. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s the way the track lends itself to play over a training montage, or the way it makes you start shadow boxing, freesyle rap battling or generally smashing whatever you’re doing, a la Eye of the Tiger.

This Oscar winning song comes from the film soundtrack to 8 Mile that also starred Eminem as the lead. The beginning starts with a slow piano, then flips to rock guitar chords with Eminem/B-Rabbit’s voice over, then the aggressive delivery that gives the song its urgency. The track plays out the background of the movie and the struggles of B Rabbit with his family, life and gaining respect.

There’s references to nerves, got giving up, hard work, taking your opportunities. All the inspirational you need to get through those tough miles.

Eminem’s early output was phenomenal and was a cultural icon blamed for all the world ills. While his output dipped in the mid noughties it seems his power and resolution is back as Donald Trump acts as a lightning rod for his lyrics as can be seem in this video from a hip hop awards show.

With his most powerful and definitive track, powering you beyond your negative thoughts, its Eminem.
